Symantec antivirus is not getting installed, error message says previous antivirus still there on my system?

My system had old version of Norton antivirus (5.0), but I wanted symantec so I tried to delete Norton folder from local drive and for this I had to try a lot every time it said ‘another program is using this file’ however no process was is running state, then I used add/remove program from control panel and somehow managed to delete Norton, but again while installing Symantec error box came which says previous antivirus is in use and because of this installation does not finish. What should I do to get rid of this problem?

peter1 		It is true that you have permanently deleted files of Norton antivirus from your system with add/remove program, but one fact that you might be unaware of is that add/remove program is not capable of uninstalling hidden files ,clearing registry entry, and freeing up application drivers. Antivirus when installed gets deeply embedded into the OS and even after uninstallation they continue to use system resources, and since you are trying to install another antivirus which has almost similar requirements, this issue has arisen. To properly install another antivirus, you first need to properly uninstall previous one with perfect uninstaller and continue installation thereafter, once registry entries have been deleted and unwanted applications removed.
