Symantec antivirus is not getting installed, error message says previous antivirus still there on my system?

My system had old version of Norton antivirus (5.0), but I wanted symantec so I tried to delete Norton folder from local drive and for this I had to try a lot every time it said ‘another program is using this file’ however no process was is running state, then I used add/remove program from control panel and somehow managed to delete Norton, but again while installing Symantec error box came which says previous antivirus is in use and because of this installation does not finish. What should I do to get rid of this problem?
